Islamic Mosque and Religious Institute (IM&RI) History

1-October 1999

A small group of Muslims decided to establish a new Mosque. Rented a space at 321 Fuller N.E in Grand Rapids to use for community prayers

3-March 2003

Applied for Recognition of Exemption under section 501 (C)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code (attached, form 8718 and form 1023).

5-February 2004

The community purchased a land (3.2 acres) to build a new Mosque Under the IM&RI name.

7-September 2007

We started to build the Mosque from the ground up. The Main level was completed in March 2010. Then we finished the lower level in May 2011.

2-April 2001

Applied for Employment Identification Number (attached form SS-4)

4-September 2003

Exempt status granted with an effective date of May 1, 2001.

6-January 2006

In mid-2005 we needed to revise our constitution and bylaws to protect Our assets. Articles VI and VII established a permanent board (founding shura) to represent the community as it acquired more assets. A group of shura members with an elected executive committee will run the mosque operation for three year terms. (In 2018 the Founding Shura updated and revised the Constitution and Bylaws for the second Time)
